So, me and Nechama were trying to figure out if there was ever an official birth order for the sons of Odin, or have we just been assuming Balder is the youngest for whatever reason - after looking we still believe that is probably the truth, he’s definitely the…
According to Norse mythology, the eldest son is Thor, borne to Odin by the earth itself. However, Baldr is most well known for his death.
In Marvel mythology I prefer to think of Balder as the eldest. Having died before Thor and Loki were born. The reason I like this is because Baldr was Odin’s son by Frigga. I think Frigga was a pretty incredible woman to raise her husband’s son by another woman/creature and a war orphan after losing her own child. I think no one questioned the existence of these two boys because the Allmother chose to raise them as her own. No one would dare to question the Queen of Asgard.
Also in Norse mythology… by now I’m sure the Asgardians were used to Odin’s whorish ways. He only has one child with his WIFE and numerous others with different people, including giants.
Nope, Balder is definitely younger than Thor and Loki in Marvel. I was looking through the JMS issues and Loki is clearly there as a young boy when Balder is born, and Thor and Loki are very close in age. Everyone KNEW that Thor was born out of wedlock and that Loki was an adopted son in the comics, but Thor is the chosen heir. There’s actually some precedent for this in Viking culture, for as long as a man recognized the child as his and part of his family, even illegitimate children had legal rights and a place in the inheritance. If Odin says Thor is the heir, Thor is the heir.
Frigga in the comics is really not at all compatible with MCU Frigga in terms of well, motherly awesomeness and care for her children.
