He was mentioning the background history of a potential criminal who abused the court system by suing different companies for weight discrimination. The company he sued in DE was a cinema in Dover.

What Marvel studios did with the Mandarin in Iron Man 3, and what JJ Abrams did with Cumberbatch playing Khan Noonien Singh are actually the exact opposite of each other.

Marvel cast British actor Ben Kingsley (who is of Indian descent) and announced he would play the yellow scare villain named the Mandarin. The trailers made this evident, and marvel basically just said ‘Trust us on this.’ I side eyed it, and there was plenty of discussion about the appropriateness of the Mandarin as a villain, but was ultimately happy with the casting when I saw the story they ultimately told.

Star Trek cast British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, and announced he would be playing an unknown villain. The trailers hinted he was Khan, and JJ Abrams said ‘Trust me, its not Khan.’ They silenced complaints of racist casting this way, and ultimately shut down discussion of the problem by putting it behind a spoiler tag.

And then Benedict Cumberbatch was totally Khan.

I have nice things to say about Star Trek, but this was not one of them.

In story, in Iron Man 3, The Mandarin (a character created for the yellow scare) who appears to be some vaguely middle eastern terrorist is actually the just an image produced white domestic villain. It plays on our expectations and normal tropes and overturns them.

In Star Trek on the other hand, Khan, now a white character with a randomly Indian name (& background if we go into previous canon), is a genetically engineered superhuman result of eugenics. It fits quite neatly into all our expectations, the Aryan superman isn’t a new idea.

I’m sorry, but I don’t think that saying the ultimate of human engineering is cumberbatch is a good example of anything other than lazy and uninspired casting making the writing seem even MORE lazy and uninspired in a way that doesn’t challenge the audience.

Khan was originally a very intelligent and sympathetic villain, and from what I’ve seen with Into the darkness, that vein is still meant to be there. Sympathetic villains in western media are often depicted by white actors, while if a villain is played by a person of color, they are often not sympathetic.

Supermen isn’t a new idea, but back in the 60s, you had writers and producers that CHALLENGED that idea by having people who were NOT aryan be the ubermensch. In 2013, the writers embrace the aryan superman just so they can go for the low hanging fruit of casting a white actor, and telling a story that was expected of them, just because it was the more popular.

I would have respected them FAR more if they had hinted at a Khan storyline, but then done a Gary Mitchell story instead. You wouldn’t have even had had to pretend that the new timeline suddenly made Khan white, even though Khan was born 300 years before any ‘new timeline’ justifications could arise.
